Unique San Francisco Weather
The true San Franciscan knows that weather in the city can be notoriously fickle--one minute it's sunny, the next minute you're burning your furniture to keep warm. Due to its location between the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay, San Francisco is often much cooler than it is just a few miles inland, with temperatures varying even from neighborhood to neighborhood. The temperature rarely falls below 40° Fahrenheit (5° Celsius) or rises above 80°F (27°C).
Visitors should expect to dress in layers. Bring a light jacket or sweater to wear over regular casual and business attire, as well as a heavier jacket or coat to wear on top, should the weather turn brisk or windy.
Summer is often chilly, even cold, going between sun and clear skies to strong winds and the famous wet, sea-drenched San Francisco fog quickly and unexpectedly. Mornings are typically foggy, dipping down to lows around 55°F (12°C), but feeling cooler, around 40°F (5°C). The fog may clear in the early afternoon, but temperatures rarely rise above 75°F (24°C), feeling about 60°F (15°C), before the fog returns in the evening.
Early fall is "Indian summer," with wonderfully warm weather in September and October. Temperatures can range from 70°-80°F (21°-27°C) with the weather cooling towards late autumn.
Winter and spring are temperate, with highs up to 65°F (18°C) during the day and lows down to 40°F (5°C). Rainy season takes place during these seasons, with the majority of rainfall occurring from February to April. Bring an insulated coat or rain jacket, in addition to a warm hat, scarf, and gloves. An umbrella may be necessary, depending on the weather forecast, and can be brought along or purchased in the city.
